History

The Archipelago of Tinharé, made up of 36 islands of litoranea formation, forming a pretty ambient complex estuary, of which deserves prominence the Islands of Tinharé, Boipeba and Cairu, for its extension and socioeconômica contribution, important areas still preserved of bushes, manguezais in abundance, lagoons and rivers, great plantations of coqueirais, situated the 35 nautical miles of the City of Salvador, region more known as Low South of the Bahia, and nicknamed affectionately "Coast of the Dendê", had the great incidence of this palm in all the region.

The island was discovered in 1531 by Martim Alfonso de called Souza and of TINAREA, later integrated the Captainship of Is Jorge of the Ilhéus, donated for D. João III the Jorge Figueiredo Correa. Under the command of Francisco Romero, it was sent to populate the land, a fleet of ships and colonists who had disembarked in the north of the island and, for being day of Sao Pablo and the place to possess the form of a mount, did not give to another one... Mount of Saint Pablo ( Morro de São Paulo ). Due to difficulty of fiscalization of the Captainship, the cove of the Mount of Saint Pablo , was for diverse times, port of pirates, smugglers and privateers, as well as for the Dutches who had been there if preparing to take the city of Salvador (1624), consummated fact and report in the History of Brazil.

With the threat of new attacks the Capital, Diogo Governor Luiz of Oliveira determined the construction of a fort in the place that if became one of the doors of entrance of recôncavo Bahian (1630). Later, in 1730, the fort was extended, other constructions had been appearing, to put, in the end of the century already met in decay. In 1823 the fort was the base of operations of the first Brazilian squadron commanded by Admiral Cochrane in the fights for Brazilian independence against the Portuguese domain.

In 1859 island had only 300 families resident, when Pedro II was visited by existing D. that he recognized and he exactly arrived to write down in its passbook the importance and the paper of prominence of the lighthouse, as well as, took bath in the existing source in the mount of São Paulo, very nice complex of captation and water storage well, even though, considered well advanced for the technology and resources at the time.
